Way to go on paying off all that debt! We've paid off most of Adam's credit card debt since February (about $10,000 actually, sad to admit). I paid off all my debt (minus a student loan and the car) back in April. We've also been making extra payments on both student loans and both car notes so that those will be paid off ahead of schedule. *And* we've had extra leftover at the end of most months to stash away a bit extra into savings. It makes me really angry to know we could be debt free by now if we'd been wiser a couple years sooner, but hey, better late than never, I figure. :)

Thanks Melissa. I've been using Mint.com for a while now. It's great for keeping track of the current state of my finances and looking at historical trends. I don't use it for budgeting because when I started this, the functionality I needed just wasn't there. I have heard that they've improved a lot. I should take another look.

Right now I use the Spend app on my iPhone and it works great for me. http://appshopper.com/finance/spend

Good luck with the house!

I'm right there with you. I manage my money so that I am never IN debt. This is especially critical now that I'm going to be taking on a huge mortgage payment with the new house. I use Mint.com to do everything you've mentioned. It's awesome. I highly recommend you check it out if you haven't already. There's the site and a complimentary iPhone app.

We share the same sentiments. You know after watching the past three elections, the least that you can say is that Obama has much more integrity than McCain and the republican party in general. You can make many points about who has said what and who voted for what...the bottom line is I'm tired of Bush, so why would I vote for another four years of it. It's time out for the help the rich, forget the poor (except when I'm speaking to them), ill-advised, unintelligent comments and decision-making that has been taking place for the last eight years. If for no other reason, I would vote for Obama because he's intelligent and quick on his feet.

You came close to describing rational ignorance -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rational_ignorance . There are even economists who make the argument that it is irrational to vote.

Due to our voting system (plurality), there is very little difference between the two parties. Think of a one hundred mile stretch of road, there are two gas stations, the most efficient placement for them would be at mile 25 and mile 75 so that no one would have to drive more than 25 miles to their closest gas station. Now imagine if the first gas station moves to mile 35, he now gets all the customers from 0 to 35 and those from ((75-35)/2)+35 = 55 35 to 55 also, since they still have a shorter drive to mile 35 than to mile 75. Eventually you will end up with your two gas stations right next to each other, because no rational person will drive past one gas station to get to another.

That is what we have with the two parties, no matter how liberal McCain is or conservative Obama is, they won't be moreso than their opponent, and no ultra conservative would vote for Obama, no liberal would vote for McCain.

Axiom is designed for MVC architectures.

You set up data models with AxiomObject prototypes.
http://axiomstack.com/learn/Prototype.properties

The functions you write for these objects serve as your controllers. The tutorials give a good outline of this.
http://axiomstack.com/learn/Tutorial

The views are easy to develop and flexible TALE templates. It's a tag based templating language.
http://axiomstack.com/learn/Axiom_TALE

There are a few key points to outline here:

1. The function defined on a prototype are essentially object methods. The "this" keyword refers to the data object you are operating on.

2. TALE templates are also invoked in the scope of the data object. What this means is that any data on the object is immediately accessible in your template.

I'm probably going to write some additional points and try to expand further on these things.

I had both childhoods.

At 11, my dad abandoned us; our house was taken, our car broke down, and my mom moved from South Gwinnett to DC to make more.

I talk to my dad now, after 12 years of silence. He is dying of end stage renal failure and is apologetic, and while I forgive, I can never forget him whacking out on us or dangling my 7 year old sister over a balcony.

"Just mom" meant no frills at all, ever, and that I had to work as soon as I could. This was purgatory. Depression and mania are hell.

Christmas being cancelled or moving a few months is highly affective. I didn't get over non-Christmas 96 until I was a grown man. I feel your pain.

If I have kids, or adopt, I swear I am not going to be a seagull father, who flies in periodically and tangentially and shits all over everything. I swear on all that is holy to me. There's some kind of African American cultural curse I must invoke but dodge here.

Normally thinking of childhood fills me with a sense of abandonment and misanthropy. If I look at it the way you have there in the end, I guess it wasn't all bad. Good story man.
